High heels can make you look and feel like a million bucks, but they can also make you look ridiculous. They can ruin your health if your posture is not right.

The line between looking sizzling in high heels and ridiculous is quite thin. It depends mostly on your body posture while you walk and stand in heels. Your posture will also have a big effect on how fast your body will get tired or feel pain.

Basically, if you feel pain in your back, neck, shoulders for example, it could be caused from wrong posture. Technically a wrong posture is not only possible when you wear high heels, but when doing pretty much anything. Even while sending texts, sitting in front of the computer or simply standing.

Bad posture habits can cause imbalanced body alignment, strain on ligaments and muscles, chronic pain, injuries, impingement, low back pain, neck pain, hip pain, joint stiffness and muscle tightness, according to Alynn Kakuk, physical therapist at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program.

In order to feel great in the long run and minimize possible health problems, developing the habit of maintaining proper posture is very important. The thing is keeping posture is a habit, and it can be a wrong one even when you try to be correct.

“When some people try to work on their posture, they tend to overdo it,” says Alynn Kakuk, physical therapist at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program to the Imperial Valley News. “They get into a super-extended position with their shoulders way back – enough that it creates too much of an arch on their back. So, they just start shifting their weight too far back.”

So what can you do? At first you should be doing regular simple exercises like stretches to keep your body and ligaments in good condition. Then you must be concious about your posture and correct it throughout the day. With time it will become a natural habit for you and you won’t really think about it.

When wearing high heels remember to keep your head up, shoulders straight and belly in. But don’t overdo it. You want to feel and look flexible but straight. Not ridgid like you’ve swallowed a stick. Also don’t forget our tricks about feeling comfortable when standing on high heels.
