Choosing high heels which are balanced properly is important. Otherwise you will be uncomfortable and in pain. Here’s how to easily find out the balance.
Balanced high heels means that the sole of the toe box and the tip of the actual heel must be in one plain. They should touch the ground at the same point.
Often that’s not the case. In an effort to make their high heels even more daring and eye-catching, some designers can’t resist but to add a little height to the heel.
There’s nothing wrong with that, as long as the entire shoe is made in a way to accommodate the extra height. Simply adding a high heel without changing the shape of the shoe slope and the toe box is a recipe for disaster.
Another problem is when the heel is too short. This means the entire shoe feels a bit like you’re falling backwards when you make a step.
How to check the balance of your high heels
Fernando Berlin is a fashion house which focuses entirely on designing and making boots. They have posted a nifty video which shows you how to find out if a pair of high heels is balanced properly.
To do that, you have to take the shoe and put it on a flat surface. The toe box should point upwards only a bit. If it is pointing up by a lot, then the heel is too high and the shoe will be uncomfortable for long walks or for a day out. Usually the heel points a bit outwards when it is too tall. If you lift the toe box up until the heel it is straight, this will show you how much taller the heel is than needed.
If the heel looks like it is pointing inwards, then lift the shoe at the back a bit until the heel is straight. This will show you exactly how much shorter the heel is. This is also a shoe that’s uncomfortable for long wearing.
Now, some cobblers can change the heels with proper ones. That depends mostly on the type of shoe and materials used. But if you do this simple test at the store before buying the shoes, then you shouldn’t have that problem ever.
